Fire alarm work is regulated, scrutinized, and unforgiving of shortcuts. We hold the SP.FA/LV license required for fire alarm work in North Carolina, license number SP.FA/LV.38826, publicly verifiable through the NC Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Every install, retrofit, and inspection follows NFPA 72.

This is the service line where the gap between a good contractor and a cheap one is least visible day to day and most consequential on the one day it matters.

Design and installation

New system design and installation for commercial buildings: initiating devices, notification appliances, panel and circuit design, battery calculations, and voltage drop. The design has to satisfy NFPA 72, the North Carolina Fire Code, and the local authority having jurisdiction, and those three do not always resolve to the same answer. Sorting that out before submittal rather than during inspection is most of the job.

We handle AHJ submittals and coordination directly. Plan review comments come back to us and get resolved by us. You should not be the intermediary between your fire alarm contractor and the fire marshal.

Inspection, testing, and maintenance

ITM per NFPA 72, on the schedule the code requires, which varies by device type and occupancy. Reports come back complete and on time, in a form your AHJ and your insurer will accept.

The thing to understand about ITM is that the report is the product. Anyone can walk a building and press test buttons. What you are paying for is an accurate record: that every device was exercised, what condition it was in, what failed, and what was done about it. A report filled in from last year’s with the dates changed is worse than no report at all, because it is documentary evidence that the system was verified when it was not. If we cannot test something, the report says so and says why.

Deficiencies

Inspections find problems. When ours do, you get a deficiency list with each item categorized by severity and code reference, so you can tell what must be corrected now from what you can budget for next cycle. We will quote the corrections, and you are free to have someone else do them. A deficiency list that exists mainly to generate change orders is not an inspection, it is a sales call.

Retrofits and panel replacements

Panel replacements, device replacement, and phased retrofits in occupied buildings. Most fire alarm retrofits happen because a panel has gone end-of-life and parts are no longer available, and they usually happen in a building that cannot close.

That constrains everything. Work happens after hours or in phases. The building cannot be left unprotected overnight, which means either fire watch coordination or a cutover plan that keeps coverage continuous. The existing wiring is rarely what the drawings claim. We plan for all three, because discovering them mid-cutover is how a one-weekend job becomes three.

Documentation

Every job ends with as-builts and a device inventory: what is installed, where, on which circuit, and how it is addressed. Fire alarm documentation outlives everyone involved in the install. The next inspector uses it, the next contractor uses it, the next owner uses it, and it is the first thing anyone asks for after an incident.

Working with your other trades

Fire alarm interfaces with more building systems than any other low-voltage trade: elevator recall, HVAC shutdown, door holders, access control release, sprinkler supervision. Those interfaces are where multi-contractor projects break, because every contractor assumes someone else owns the interlock. Since we also do low voltage and alarm and access control, we can own the whole boundary instead of negotiating it across three companies on a conference call.
